Springtime of Youth!

A long time ago, there was a young tree. It just grew it's first leaf. One night, there was a terrible storm. The young tree held onto the soil for dear life as the gushing winds nearly uprooted it.

As the years went by, the young tree absorbed water and nutrients and kept growing - slowly but steadily.

After 15 years, the tree was strong and sturdy. And no matter how hard the storms blew, it was deeply rooted and did not fall.

With this story in mind, Team Picolove headed down to Taman Jurong Zone B for our local CIP!

The estate was definitely eye-catching with it's interesting choice of colours.

The team planned to conduct a few activities for the 80 Primary 1 to Primary 3 students staying in the estate. We planned an introduction to life in Laos, simple demostrations of science using household items, basic hygiene lessons and basic craft lessons for the children!

However, before the activities took place, the team had to prepare the materials!

And what is an event without decorations and team photos!

Finally, the event kicks off!

Bernice, the MC for the night, started off by hyping the kids up!

When the kids were all warmed up, Hou Pang (otherwise known as Ryan) and Kenneth introduced the children to their past experiences from Picolove!

Though the kids may be young, they certainly realised some differences between Laotian children and themselves. Things around us, like education and buildings, are often taken for granted. Not just the kids, but everyone is guilty of rushing through life and neglecting to just stop, appreciate and be thankful for some of the simple things in life.

The team then involved the kids in the making of a Singapore-Laos collage! The kids either wrote down well wishes or coloured the pieces of the collage that they were given.

After which, the two scientists, Eunice and Kay Yuen took the spotlight!

They modelled a volcanic eruption using simple household items like vinegar and baking soda! Much to the delight of the kids, they also constructed a simple hovercraft!

The kids then broke up into their smaller groups and went through a series of short lessons!

They learnt how to fold origami frogs..

as well as how to create happy monsters..

as well as how to wash hands..

as well as how to brush teeth!

However, all good things must come to an end.

With energy drained but spirits high, the adults and children came together for a final group photo before calling it a night.

Though it was only one night, the team left the garden knowing that there will be many strong and sturdy trees in the future.
